Our environment continues to suffer as we proceed along the path of urbanisation. From raising dense concrete forests that emit poisonous gases to generating non-recycled seas of plastic, we are on a fast track towards earth’s deterioration. With temperature on the rise, water levels have increased instigating an impending threat of swallowing the land. If we continue to destroy the environment at this rate, the doom draws closer. The growing population demands technological progress which accelerates urbanisation. However, clearing out forests affects the air quality, temperature and also impacts the food chain in the longer run. Bad air quality and higher levels of pollution can be detrimental for different species of flora and fauna. This can lead to reduction and in course of time, extinction of that particular species. In order to manage this dire situation, we need to take steps which will slow down this imminent cataclysm.
A green cover has the capacity to slow down pollution. Since, space is shrinking, we need to be mindful and create little pockets of green that can make a difference. There is a wave of sustainable, green living which can propel us towards a better future. Metro cities are recognising the dangers posed by urbanisation and are adopting a greener approach. Conservation of a green habitat is beneficial as it will conserve the flora and fauna in that area. Since square space is limited in a metro city, greenery can be introduced on different surfaces. We need to create a microcosm of a forest that will render a path towards healthy living. According to researchers at University of Wisconsin-Madison, rooftops, backyards, parks or gardens can be combined to make green infrastructure. These have several benefits as they consume greenhouse gases and absorb heat thus reducing the temperature. This greenery also provides habitat for small insects and animals. These benefits or ecosystem services can be the saviour in the long run as they can definitely reduce the carbon footprint. According to researchers at Michigan State University, Global Warming can be reduced by storing carbon in new reservoirs, the easiest way to do so would be to introduce greenery on rooftops.
As a colour, green has soothing capabilities, a little spurt of green within your house can improve air quality and introduce a sense of calm. The Shillim Estate is a macrocosm of green inspiration that we can emulate. An immaculate example of nature and its sheer power, this green expanse stretches over the Shillim Valley and houses around 325 species of plants. It has been aptly declared as a World Heritage site and it is a hotspot for biodiversity. Dharana at Shillim is a wellness centre that has completely embraced Nature into its holistic healing programmes and its infrastructure. The immense influence of Nature is reflected in the benign environment, healthy organic food and the healing sensibilities making it the most sought-after wellness retreats near Mumbai.
We need to comprehend the fact that there is no planet B, as a community we need to take integrated efforts towards conserving our environment. This includes taking green initiatives with a perspective of sustainable living. A cultural shift towards a reforested and carbon foot-print conscious mindset can pave the way towards a better future.
